Background Checks, Done Right.
You may have seen television shows like NCSI or some crime show. These shows tell you how you can gather all sorts of information from a criminal records check. But real life is much more different from television. Criminal records checks are vastly different from tv and have changed over the years.
Years ago, the FBI overhauled its criminal records division as it needed cleaning up and reorganizing due to the ever-changing world of technology. In the same sense, businesses need to conduct these routine checks and overhauls to keep up with shifting digital trends.
When it comes to checking someone’s criminal record, you have to go through several levels. Criminal checks run through various systems put in place by the courts, such as the lower courts, misdemeanor courts, and county courts.
In Ohio, for example, we have eighty-eight counties. Out of all these counties, we have two hundred and thirty-three misdemeanor courts. If a business wanted to conduct a criminal background check, it would need to go through the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. But even the BCI admits that their records are only about sixty to seventy percent complete, and they don’t contain certain information you need for employment screening.
When doing employment screenings, criminal background checks, you want to maintain the maximum possible accuracy when conducting this procedure for potential new employees. The industry standard is to do a background check based on where you’ve lived, worked, and gone to school for the last seven years.
A Successful Criminal Records Check
To have a successful and accurate criminal background check, you have to set up realistic expectations. These expectations will coincide with industry standards. When conducting a criminal records check, you want to check the cities and counties where the individual has lived. This could bump up your criminal records check by having a forty percent increase in information available to your business.
